His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, President of the Republic of Ghana, paid an official visit to Saint Vincent and the Grenadines on Wednesday 12th June, 2019. The President’s visit formed part of a Caribbean tour to promote ‘The Year of Return, Ghana 2019’, which is a strategic marketing initiative targeting the Global African Community to mark 400 years of the first enslaved Africans arriving in Jamestown, Virginia, USA.

As part of his official tour, President Akufo-Addo visited the SVG Botanical Garden, the oldest of its kind in the Western Hemisphere. There he was welcomed by Mr. Gordon Shallow, Curator (Ag.), Primary and Secondary school students, and patrons who came to have a glimpse of the Ghanian President.

Cultural performances were provided by the Starlift Steel Orchestra and the Renaissance Dance Company, who performed the Punta, a traditional dance of the Garifuna, one of the indigenous Peoples of SVG. Following the cultural performances, the President proceeded to plant a seedling of the Teak tree (Tectona grandis). 

President Akufo-Addo was also expected to visit Barbados, Jamaica, the Republic of Guyana, and the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago.
