THE SOUTH COAST MARINE MANAGEMENT AREA (SCMMA)

DESIGN-A-LOGO

COMPETITION

BACKGROUND

The area defined as the South Coast of St Vincent extends from Great Head in the south west to Johnson Point on the south east and is an area of intense development activities. Almost in the centre of the area is the town of Calliaqua, with a population of approximately twenty two thousand (22,000) people representing one fifth of the island’s population. The town is served by a police station, a primary school, the St Vincent Community College, a health centre and the country’s main coastguard base. The coastal area is bordered by several visitor accommodation establishments, a mariner, a fisheries complex, six jetties and three groins. Fishermen launch their boats from this area and land their catch there, while members of the community enjoy the coastal waters for recreation. Divers and pleasure craft operators also use the area. Given the plethora of use and users, the decision was taken to declare the area a Marine Management Area.

As part of this Declaration, a Communication Strategy has been developed to sensitize the general public aboutthe South Coast Marine Managed Area (SCMMA). The selected Theme is:

Preserving Biodiversity and Pride in the South Coast Community

A Slogan was also developed in support of the theme. The slogan is:

The South Coast Marine ManageMENT Area - It’s a BEAUTIFUL THING!

We are currently seeking to develop a LOGO to be used by the SCMMA in all of its activities and transactions.
